From Nursery Assistant to Photographer.

Ramla is a photographer who grew up in Sandnes with nature as her inspiration. She loves to capture the beauty of the world around her with her camera. She shares with us her views of Stavanger and her passion for photography.

Q: Where are you from and where do you live now?
A: I was born in Somalia and I came to Norway when I was very young. I also lived in England for a few years, but now I’m back in Stavanger.

Q: What is your current job, and what are your aspirations?
A: I work as a nursery assistant, but my dream is to become a full-time photographer and collaborate with different brands.

Q: What do you love about Rogaland, and where is your favourite place in the region, and why?
A: Rogaland is my home, especially Sandnes. It’s where I have many childhood memories. My favourite place is Sandvedparken, a beautiful park where I used to play with my family.

Q: How did your interest for photography start and what type of photography gives you joy?
A: When I was 10, I borrowed my dad’s camera and took a photo of my sister jumping in the air. I was amazed by how I captured that moment. That’s how it all started. I enjoy photographing nature the most, because it’s always been a big part of my life.

Q: What photo gear do you use and what is your favourite lens, and why?
A: I use a Canon 700D and my favourite lens is the Canon 50mm F1.8. It’s my first prime lens and it makes me think more about my shots. It’s also very sharp.

Q: If you could photograph any person or place of your choice, who/what would it be, and why?
A: I would love to photograph Lofoten in the north of Norway, especially during the midnight sun. I think that would be an incredible experience.

Q: Where is your favourite place you’ve ever visited, and where is your dream destination?
A: Switzerland is my favourite place that I’ve visited so far. It has stunning nature scenery. If I had to choose one city, it would be Lucerne. My dream destination is also Switzerland, but I would like to explore more of it.

Q: If you could have dinner with one person, past or present, who would it be, and why?
A: I would like to have dinner with Prophet Muhammad, because he is my religious role model. I would love to talk to him about his life, his virtues and his character.

Q: When did you feel you were most out of your comfort zone? What did you learn from that experience?
A: When I moved to Birmingham, England, it was hard for me to photograph a big city with no nature around. But that challenged me to learn more about how to use my camera and improve my skills.

Q: What would you say to your former self?
A: My former self almost gave up on photography, so I would say don’t stop and keep going.
