Omgi: Creating Sustainable Cabins Where the View is the Star of the Show

Omgi produces modern cabins that give guests a more intimate experience of the Norwegian outdoors. We spoke to Aziz Chaer, Omgi’s CEO, about the company’s story, its sustainable vision, and the partnerships it’s built with Norway’s top designers and craftsmen.

“At Omgi, we’re taking a traditional form of architecture—the humble cabin—and bringing it into the present,” Aziz Chaer, Omgi’s CEO, says.

“We want to help people who have a desire to live simply, sustainably, and surrounded by nature. Our modern, Norwegian-made, minimal-footprint cabins offer the perfect opportunity for them to enjoy the beautiful Nordic outdoors in comfort.”

Omgi’s cabins are beautiful creations in their own right. That’s thanks largely to the partnerships that Aziz and his team have forged with some of Norway’s best-known designers and craftspeople. One of the world’s preeminent architecture firms, Snøhetta, designed the cabins, while historic Norwegian producer, Huseby, provided the kitchen and furnishings. The result is a breathtaking piece of engineering that’s sleek, intelligent, and homely.

“We’ve been really happy to work with so many Norwegian brands over the years. And our commitment to working with local producers has recently been rewarded. We’ve just this year been certified as a Made in Norway producer, by the Norwegian government,” Aziz says.

“Yet even though so many big names have worked on our products, each cabin has been designed to highlight the real star of the show: what’s happening outside.”

Indeed, Omgi in Norwegian means “surroundings”. With an entire facade made of glass, which can be fully opened, these cabins let you enjoy the view from the comfort of your bed. Wherever the cabin is placed—whether on a remote clifftop or deep in a forest—it’s designed to give you a greater intimacy with the world around you.

In that spirit, Omgi works hard to minimise the impact of your stay in the places you love.

“We’ve always tried to reduce the footprint of our cabins—ever since the company was founded in 2017,” Aziz tells us.

“When the company first started, the cabins were repurposed from steel containers. But over the years, we’ve been finding ways to replace as much of the structure as possible with wood. Today, we’ve reduced the steel we use by as much as 90%—to lower the weight of the cabins, minimise emissions, and limit the physical impact that the structure has on the earth. Now, if we were to remove a cabin, you wouldn’t know that it was there at all.”

It could hardly be easier to get started with a low-impact cabin with Omgi. One of the perks of Omgi’s service is that, once you buy the cabin, they’ll manage the entire process of installation—including the planning permission, the infrastructure, and everything else.

The ready-to-move-in cabin is lifted into place and easily connected to the infrastructure. Even the furniture can be delivered inside the cabins to reduce the transport footprint.

As Aziz says, it means that Omgi is “all inclusive” for creating a new home in nature.

“So many people are now dreaming of a different kind of lifestyle—one that’s slower, more in touch with nature’s rhythms and cycles, and more sustainable. At Omgi, we can make that dream come true—without any hassle or worry.”
